Sure Been A Cold Winter!

So over here in the UK, we didn't get snow in time for Christmas...but just when we thought we got away with it - bam! Luckily, trickles of rain were soon to follow :)

Boy, the way they sensationalise the weather over 'ere...you would think it never snowed before!

Anywhat...here are a few winter essentials that I have had my eye on, enjoy!

The Blow Dry...

Yesterday, I decided to take a detour from my twistout and handle a tad bit of heat! I'm slowly letting down my guard when it comes to blow drying/straightening, but I think that shying away from the heat has been good for the honey beast!

This is the 3rd time I've blow-dried my hair since transitioning, and this post back at my 1 year mark is more or less the same to what I did last night, minus a few products:
  • I washed my hair, applying some Tresemme Naturals Nourishing Moisture and before washing it out, rubbed in some Black soap to my scalp
  • Then I rinsed with water, followed by an ACV rinse
  • I detangled, deep conditioned with the Tresemme, Olive oil and Honey, twisted into large sections, then rinsed and used an old t-shirt to absorb some of the water for a few minutes.
  • Once it had stopped dripping, I untwisted one section at a time, applying some Giovanni Direct Leave-in Coditioner, Grapeseed Oil [natural defence against heat] and Tresemme Heat Defence Smooth Styling, smoothing in each product before the next. I applied a tiny bit extra leave-in conditioner at the ends.
  • Lastly, I put my hair dryer on a low-medium heat and held the section of hair out firmly at an angle, then moved the hair dryer up and down the section until it was completely dry.
It took around 1 hour and a half and I think this may be the best result so far! It's much softer and managed to work some of the more defined kinks out, so playing around with your method every now and again can be worthwhile :)

Vintage Aztec Western Bag

This artsy vintage aztec bag  from PoorBoy caught my eye this morning on the lookout for some Christmas bits and bobs. Isn't she a treat? The hand woven design at the front makes it stand out amongst the rest of the tan bags on the market, and the tassels add even more character....want want want!

Reunited + It Feels So Good!

Helloooo :)

I can't believe how long it's been! The blog has been pretty quiet over the last couple months, and boy I've missed it....

There are two very exciting things happening at the moment and I can't wait until I can fill you guys in, but I promise it has all been for a worthy cause :)

This month marks 18 months into my transition, and I'm feeling super-duper that I've lasted so long. I have to tell you that I'm very much missing the summer months because this rain loves to tear up all that hard work involved in a wash day! Oh....running out of Coconut oil is no joke - I refuse to pay more for a smaller jar here at uni, when I know I can get a bigger one for less back home. The problem is, I keep forgetting to make the purchase when I visit...sigh.

Anywho...I intend to blowdry my hair later today, so some pics will follow!

Oh and how dopey dope is the artwork above?! Check out Ash The Painter's website for more...

Take Care Luvlies!

On Film: Kickin' It With The Kinks

So the lovely Moderne Meid tweeted me about an upcoming event that I can ACTUALLY go to :)

Kickin' It With The Kinks, is a documentary about the haircare culture of women of African descent. As much as it may seem that natural hair is everywhere right now, there are still many, many more women who choose to relax. The documentary asks questions such as; 'Is relaxing our hair worth it?' and 'how is beauty (re)defined by society?'

The documentary will be screened in:
Leeds on the 24th Oct 2012 - @ The Electric Press
Birmingham on the 28th Oct 2012 - @ Custurd Factory

Review Hub: Afroveda Totally Twisted Ginger Almond Butter Cream

You know those rare occasions where you purchase something, leave it on the shelf for a good few months, then out of nowhere you say; 'hey...show me what you got', and before you know it, you realise you've been sitting on a gem this whole time? Yes - this is definitely one of those blessed occasions.

The Product:
Afroveda: Totally Twisted Ginger Almond Butter Cream

Price:
£6.50 [2oz] £15.50 [8oz] at British Curlies

Product Description/Instructions:
Thick, Curly or Natural Hair - Adds intense moisture to dry hair. With Ayurvedic botanicls of Bhringaraj, Amla, Ashwagandha and Neem to moisturize and rejuvenate dry and frizzy coils and kinks.
  • Hair butters are used to infuse intense moisture into the hair. Use nightly on the ends of dry hair by melting a small amount in palms of hands and applying to hair. Wrap hair with a satin scarf before bed (or sleep on a satin pillowcase).
  • Can also be used on clean, wet hair to infuse moisture, or as a styling aid for twists or braids. Remember, a little goes a long way!
My Experience:
I usually turn to my trusty Shea Butter when it comes to twisting my hair for the night so, imagine my shock when I realised that I hadn't yet lined up a replacement as this batch was almost through. Luckily, it invited me to think fast and lo and behold - Afroveda!

Sunday Jukebox: SZA - 'Country'

So, I came across singer-songwriter, SZA, as I was on the hunt for some music gems to update my iTunes library with today. She offers up her take on Australian group, Empire Of The Sun's Country. Officially chilled....

What I Wore: Yellow And Black, Triangles Intact!

Why. hello there :)

Yesterday I made my way to Birmingham's O2 Academy to see two of my favourites when it comes to British music, Mr Maverick Sabre, and the legendary (yes, legendary) Ms Dynamite! They were both amazing and totally worth every penny, oh...and that neck pain acheived from holding my head in awkawrd angles to actually see the stage (don't you just hate when an overly tall person plonks themselves right infront of you?!)

I love the feeling you get from experiencing live music, so when the artists are actually able to deliver the goods better than the studio recordings on the album, it just puts the cherry on the bakewell ;)

Back to the wardrobe, the blouse is one of the items I picked up from one of  the cute vintage shops during my time in Amsterdam. It makes me feel so early 90's!
